Martin Lavelle
Trustee
A Headteacher for 16 years, Martin led two very contrasting schools, Whitefield School in Barnet and Southgate School in Enfield. Whitefield served an area of considerable deprivation and was a ‘National Challenge’ school when Martin became Headteacher there in 2009. By the time he left in December 2014 its fortunes had been transformed and Ofsted had judged its leadership and management to be ‘Outstanding’, with Martin described as an ‘Inspirational’ Headteacher.
Southgate School, which Martin led from 2015 until his retirement in 2025, was judged to be Outstanding in every category by Ofsted in 2025 and had been a Teaching School and lead school of the Enfield Teaching School Alliance -Southgate.
Martin was one of two Teaching School Council representatives for the East of England, North East London region, an area that also encompassed Southend, Thurrock and Essex, which meant that he was closely involved in building structures to bring teaching schools across the region together to create capacity and share best practice.
He was a National Leader of Education and worked as a consultant Headteacher for the London Leadership Securing Good programme for several years, working closely with several Headteacher colleagues in the process of helping them move their schools to Ofsted Good.
